Getting pregnant is not an issue for me. One slip up and bam, I’m pregnant whether it was intentional or not. I’ve been lucky in that way. But I’m not here to brag about having any sort of superior fertility. I’ve heard the fears of women afraid they might not be able to conceive a child of their own.
I’d like to share my personal journey through conception, miscarriage, and ultimately two full-term pregnancies in hopes of being able to comfort others in need of emotional support on their journey to motherhood. I will also be featuring Astroglide TTC Trying to Conceive™, a product specifically designed for couples who want to get pregnant.
And my story begins as so many others do…
It was after my second year of college. I moved in with my boyfriend (now husband) and within weeks was mysteriously late on my period. How responsible right? Truthfully, we were careful and consistently using birth control, but unpredictable things occur when you decide to trust condoms alone.
The moment the nurse told me my pregnancy test was positive, the world stopped. I almost couldn’t breathe. Never before had I even considered having a baby so young. I never had daydreams or thought much about babies at all. I was in complete shock. I went to my mom’s house and cried. Yes, I cried. Then, I also was very disturbed that something was growing inside of me. I didn’t like the initial feeling at all.
But it only took about a half hour for my fears to settle and my Sagittarian optimistism to kick in full gear. I was suddenly thrilled for a forever life-changing adventure. I love the adrenal rush of life completely stopping and shifting (positively) in a matter of seconds.
Three weeks passed and everyone knew I was pregnant. Boyfriend took it well and was happy. Everyone was excited because I was the first person in our immediate families to have a baby so it was all brand new! I started baby shopping, name searching and dreaming up cozy little nurseries where I’d snuggle in with my new baby. I even imagined it would be a girl named Jade. Of course, I was feeling the typical nausea and fatigue along with other early pregnancy symptoms but it didn’t bother me too much. I was just ecstatic!
And then, the worst thing happened.
My body and mind suffered with a miscarriage. Waves of rolling cramps filled my abdomen. I spent 24 hours in excruciating pain, sweat, and tears, only to be left belittled for two years as the world continued to make babies without me. It wasn’t that I couldn’t physically conceive again, but rather my husband being smart and telling me no in order to finish college.
The thing about miscarriages
Many women, myself included, instantly blame themselves and make up reasons on how they may have caused their miscarriage. Let me begin by saying that in many cases having a miscarriage is NOT your fault. A miscarriage occurs in the first 20 weeks of a woman’s gestational period and is the most common form of pregnancy loss. According to The American Pregnancy Association, the chance of miscarriage ranges from 10%-25% for all women in their childbearing years. It most commonly occurs due to chromosomal abnormalities in the baby like damages to the egg or sperm cell.
While it can be very traumatic, you shouldn’t lose hope of carrying another child to full-term. I am a prime example of someone who experienced this type of loss and have lived on to birth two little miracles.
A cure for my bitter, sorrowful soul
My husband and I were in the process of submitting paperwork to teach English abroad in Taiwan. It was my last semester of college and we were looking for an exciting way to make money. I literally clicked submit on the online application before going to the bathroom and bringing out a positive pregnancy test.
Bye Bye Taiwan.
My mind was instantly back to daydreaming about having our own baby. The previous two years of emotional turmoil and heavy drinking changed immediately into something much more glorious. I was going to be a mother! I had no fears of a second miscarriage, though I kept the pregnancy a secret for much longer than the first one, just to be safe. I was effortlessly cured of my pain and could officially start fresh again.
I went on to birth a healthy baby girl and another baby boy two and a half years apart. I had a very early miscarriage at 5 weeks in between, but it was not nearly as traumatizing as the first one. I had a beautiful little girl to focus on instead. My children bring on a whole new meaning to life and they have taught me just how much a human being can do on severe sleep deprivation! 😉 But they are seriously the sweetest things ever. I love them so much!
